The New Bern Amateur Radio Club (NBARC) hosted its first Winter Field Day at the Filling Station on January 28th, 2023. This field day event is held to give amateur radio operators (HAMS) all over the world a chance to test their radio equipment outdoors and under alternate power to simulate field use in case of emergency. Our weather was perfect by most standards for any time of year, but especially for the last weekend of January. We had a wonderful turnout from club members and interested folks from the community.
The club had 8 radio operators set up and working to communicate with other amateur stations across the country and the globe. One operator made a contact in Colombia and another in Poland. Most contacts were stateside and brief as the contest format allows for a quick exchange of the number of operators at the station, shelter situation (inside outside or mobile), and location. Everyone operating made multiple contacts. The event was an all-around success as all of the boxes were checked - getting outside, operating equipment remotely, having fellowship with other amateur radio members, and sharing that interest with the public.
We hope that the NBARC will make plans to have their Summer Field Day with us this year as well. If you have any questions about NBARC, please contact them here.
