Bridging Food and Medicine: A New Health Initiative at The Filling Station

In Episode 28 of The Filling Station Podcast, Mary Ann LeRay sits down with Marcy Hoffman, the administrative coordinator at The Filling Station, to introduce an exciting new program coming to Jones County — Bridging Foods and Meds. Funded by Carolina East, this initiative is designed to help community members understand the powerful connection between the food they eat and the medications they take, and how that relationship shapes overall health and wellness.

Marcy's story is one of the best kinds — a volunteer who showed up during the flood of 2018, put her accounting and bookkeeping skills to work behind the scenes, helping to build the systems used for annual reporting and grant tracking. Over time, she has become an important part of the organization's daily operations. Now, after nearly 20 years of personally navigating health and wellness through her family's history of autoimmune disorders, she's channeling that knowledge into something the whole community can benefit from. From growing her own fruits and vegetables to making elderberry syrup with local honey, Marcy lives what she believes: that the food we put in our bodies makes a profound difference in the way we feel and function.

The Bridging Foods and Meds program will draw on resources like Todd Burrier's Three Circles Living and Casey Means' The Good Energy Book to help participants develop both the knowledge and the mindset needed for lasting lifestyle change. Because as Marcy reminds us, this isn't about a quick fix — it's about learning to thrive. The program is expected to roll out in late spring, and it addresses some of the most common health challenges in the community, including high blood pressure, heart health, and strengthening the immune system.

This episode introduces a new effort to improve community health by equipping people with knowledge, practical tools, and encouragement to make informed decisions about food, medication, and daily wellness.
