Amateur Radio Operators to Receive National Traffic System Training at The Filling Station

POLLOCKSVILLE, NC – The Filling Station in Pollocksville will host a comprehensive Traffic Handling Seminar on November 22, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., offering essential training for amateur radio operators interested in public service communications and emergency message handling. John Riley, KO4OFO, NC Section Net Control Station, will lead the formal training session focused on National Traffic System formats and procedures.

The three-hour seminar will concentrate on proper techniques for on-air message handling during public service events and emergency situations, with practical exercises and hands-on training included throughout the session. The training is designed to benefit newcomers to traffic handling, experienced operators seeking a refresher, public service volunteers, and emergency communications personnel from organizations including AUXCOMM, Red Cross, SATERN, and other agency-based traffic handling groups.

“Amateurs can behave professionally on the air. This class is about accuracy, teamwork, and service,” said Riley. “Whether you’re new to radio or have years of experience, learning to handle traffic messages efficiently with high operational standards ensures our communities stay connected when it matters most.”

The National Traffic System represents a critical component of amateur radio's public service mission, providing organized message handling capabilities during emergencies when traditional communication systems may be compromised. Amateur radio operators trained in NTS protocols serve as a vital communications backup for government agencies, emergency management, and community organizations across North Carolina and the nation.

The Filling Station, located in the heart of Jones County, has become an increasingly important community gathering space for educational programs and training opportunities. The venue's central location in Eastern North Carolina makes it accessible for amateur radio operators from surrounding counties interested in enhancing their emergency communications capabilities.

Participants will learn proper message formatting, routing procedures, handling priorities, and communication protocols essential for effective traffic handling during emergencies and public service events. The hands-on approach ensures that attendees leave with practical skills they can immediately apply in their amateur radio operations.

The seminar is sponsored by the New Bern Amateur Radio Club and hosted by The Filling Station. The New Bern Amateur Radio Club works to maintain emergency communications readiness and promote amateur radio's public service capabilities throughout Eastern North Carolina.

The training is free and open to all licensed amateur radio operators and those interested in emergency communications. Advance registration is required, as space is limited.

Registration is available on the Filling Station website.  Additional information about amateur radio training and emergency communications in Eastern North Carolina is available through the NBARC.org website.

The Filling Station continues to serve Jones County and surrounding areas as a multipurpose community facility, hosting educational programs, nonprofit initiatives, and community gatherings that strengthen regional connections and enhance local capabilities.
