In the fifth installment of Bridging Foods and Meds, Mary Ann LeRay sits down with Marcy Hoffman, program lead for The Filling Station's new Bridging Foods and Meds initiative, to talk about a topic that touches nearly every part of daily life: joint health. Using the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz as a friendly starting point, Marcy walks through what a joint actually is. She covers the cartilage, synovial fluid, ligaments, tendons, and muscles that work together every time we walk, climb stairs, or reach for something on a shelf.
The conversation quickly moves from anatomy to action. Marcy explains why joint pain and stiffness show up in the first place: aging, old injuries, extra weight, inflammation, and simply not moving enough. She reframes pain itself as an alarm worth listening to rather than ignoring. From there, she and Mary Ann dig into the everyday choices that protect joints over time, including eating enough protein and omega-3s, loading up on colorful fruits and vegetables, drinking enough water, and staying consistently active with low-impact movement like walking, cycling, swimming, and Pilates. Mary Ann shares her own habit of getting up every 30 to 45 minutes at her desk for a quick set of squats, proof that protecting your joints doesn't require a gym membership, just consistency.
Marcy's biggest message lands near the end of the episode. Healthy joints aren't really about avoiding pain. They're about preserving the independence to live at home, run errands, and take care of yourself without relying on others, one small, consistent habit at a time.
The episode also looks ahead to the next phase of Bridging Foods and Meds: a seminar series kicking off July 28th with speaker Todd Burrier of Life Plus, focused on mindset, supplementation, and self-advocacy. The series is made possible through a grant from the Carolina East Foundation, with registration and a "good energy checklist" available now at fillingstation1075.com under Programs.
