This episode, host Mary Ann LeRay sits down with Marcy Hoffman, The Filling Station's onsite nutrition educator, for a heart-to-heart on heart health, part of our ongoing Bridging Foods and Meds series, made possible by the Carolina East Foundation and the American Heart Association, longtime partners who helped fund our recording studio.
Marcy breaks down what "heart health" actually means: the heart, blood vessels, and circulation working together to deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, while shaping everything from brain function to blood pressure to inflammation. She walks through the warning signs worth paying attention to: dizziness, fatigue, chest discomfort, swelling in the legs, shortness of breath, and an important reminder that heart attack symptoms in women can be subtler, sometimes feeling more like heartburn than a dramatic event. Because heart conditions tend to develop gradually and silently, Marcy makes the case for annual heart checks as one of the simplest forms of prevention.
From there, the conversation turns practical. Instead of "diet," Marcy talks about good nutrition: whole foods like berries, citrus, broccoli, bell peppers, and leafy greens; whole grains such as oats, quinoa, and brown rice; and healthy fats from avocados, olive oil, nuts, and fish like salmon and trout. She offers an easy way to think about antioxidants: picture them as firefighters putting out the sparks (free radicals) that can damage our cells, and explains why keeping sodium in the 1,500–2,300 mg range matters for blood pressure. Local food gets a shoutout too, with mentions of Jones County families raising their own poultry and beef, and partnerships with Parker Farm and Ross Farms.
Marcy's biggest takeaway may be her simplest: movement is one of the most powerful things we can do for our hearts, and it doesn't require a gym membership. A ten-minute walk after a meal, a stroll through the neighborhood, or a Silver Sneakers class at the Y all count. Her closing advice, start small, stay consistent, and let go of perfection, is a fitting reminder that better heart health is built one honest tweak at a time.
